Women Motocross World Championship Round 5 at MXGP of Maggoira was full of anticipation and expectation that racing would be tight, competitive, and exciting on the first day of racing. With rain falling over night and continuing until after mid-day, Qualifying was cancelled for the women and Free Practice lap times were used for gate pick for Race 1.

NZ’s Courtney Duncan claimed pole with 2:31.284 heading into R1 with overall leader Lotte van Drunen posting 2:31.537. Rounding out the top 5 were Dutch rider Lynn Valk, hauling 2:32.987, Kiara Fontanesi posting 2:35.839, and Daniela Guillen on 2:36.846.

The first lap proved more than challenging for the full-gate field with many sliding through the sloppy mud, some not making the up-hills, and by Lap 3 a red flag was waved to discontinue the race. Hard start for the women, with the only consolation that Sunday’s Race 2 looks to be in drier conditions.

All eyes will be watching when gates drop tomorrow- there is plenty at stake. WMX points leader Lotte van Drunen holds 8 point lead over Spanish rider Daniela Guillen, with Kiara Fontanesi and LynnValk tied on 141 points respectively.

WMX Race 2 Sunday June 16.
