Kiara Fontanesi wins WMX Round 2 at MXGP of Spain – remix of winning WMX Championship in 2017. Displaying an amazing performance on track from taking pole in qualifying, to finishing 2 – 1 on a dry and wet/muddy track, the 6x WMX Champion proved a formidable force against young and seasoned rider’s alike.

The winning result pays tribute to Kiara’s remarkable ability to rise above life’s challenges of juggling being a mother to her two daughters and training to race in WMX from one season to the next. Nether deterred that such a demanding schedule is hard work, nor discouraged that her competitors are equally determined to stand on the top step of the podium, #8 proved she has every intention of fighting for the win.
And, what a victory it was, blitzing out of the gate in R1 and R2, making passes stick in the opening laps, and pushing to hold the gap up front even under pressure from Spanish rider – Daniela Guillen – who was determined to make it a double moto win at her home GP. Most certainly, Kiara’s speed matched her counter-parts on the dry track on Saturday, but it was her ability to navigate the slippery, muddy conditions on the water logged Lugo circuit on Sunday, that set her apart from the rest.

Such resilience to race to the best of her ability has been founded on racing a grand total of 87 GP’s from 2009 to the present day, with particular nod to Kiara’s WMX Championship win in 2017 at the Final Round at Pays de Montbeliard. Not only were points tight between the top 3, but rain falling in R1 and R2 proved more than challenging for most to either get around the track, or stay upright on the bike. Kiara kept steadfast in her pursuit of victory, taking the overall Round win and Title with 233 points, Livia Lancelot was second on 232, and Courtney Duncan completed the top three, on 231 points.
Heading into 2025 WMX Round 3 at MXGP of Germany in 3 weeks time, Kiara will sustain forward momentum gained from the Round 2 win which has consolidated her points standings of P2 overall. Red Plate holder – Lotte van Drunen – will take comfort from retaining her 8 point advantage – on 88 points – with Dutch rider – Lynn Valk – in P3. Undoubtedly, racing on the hard pack of Teutschenthal on June 1 will test all rider’s yet again – let’s see what the weather will do, and who will rise to the top at the half-way mark of the Championship.
