Extreme E will host FIM E-XPLORER for Rounds 7 and 8 in Sardinia – with FIA and Extreme E announcing a Memorandum of Understanding on the creation of a new hydrogen racing Series from 2025. As conveyed by Extreme E founder Alejandro Agag, combining FIM E-XPLORER with Extreme E Island X Prix holds special significance with both Championships founded on reducing the carbon footprint within diversity of gendered racing.
Such shifts in the advancement of sustainable racing not only opens opportunities for collaboration between FIA and FIM all-electric Series, but also broadens the approach that future hydrogen powered vehicles have the capabilities of gaining World Championship status – the objective for 2026.
Dig a bit deeper into the prerogatives of both Championships, and questions are answered on the reasoning behind such a massive financial commitment to develop hydrogen powered prototypes ready to race next season, along with Manufacturers who have funded 9 Teams to race the all-electric bike Series.
For Extreme E, the momentum gained from debut year in 2019 to present season, has increased awareness on the need for alternative fuel based racing relevant to the protection of natural environments around the world. Next step on the transition of the 10 Rounds all-electric Series to World Championship status comes from sharing the development of new technological racing with FIA’s long term strategy of using ‘sustainable power resources in Motorsport’ – as stated by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
For FIM E-XPLORER, the principle of thought on providing sustainable all-electric bike Championship aligns with the development of race-to-road bikes compatible with changing climatic conditions. From debut year in 2022, to present season of 9 Teams each with 18 rider’s – male and female – Brand association paints definitive common interest in the development of sustainability in Motorsport. Current standings are: MIE Racing founded by Japan’s Midori Moriwaki on 66 points, followed by America’s Robbie Maddison’s Maddwill Team tied with Gravity on 64 points.
Most certainly, Extreme E Rounds 7 and 8 will activate new chapter in Motorsport, providing collaborative opportunities to align the development of new technological based racing on 4 wheels and 2. From qualifying to main race, each Team, composing of 2 rider’s – male and female – will showcase their skills and talent from the experienced Laia Sanz and Mattias Ekstrom leading Extreme E Championship table, to Gravity rider’s Kiara Fontanesi and Camille Chapeliere.
If the history of Motorsport has been founded on adaptation to race for highest possible performance within resources available, Extreme E and FIM E-XPLORER pave the way for further refinement on the future platform Motorsport will race on.
