Capturing Media vs telling a story – what works and why…

Media Creation for 2024 - going beyond the status quo page 89 page 129_1

Capturing Media vs telling a story – what works and why. The difference between posting visual photos taken at random compared to nailing a sequence of planned shots which tell a story can either make or break viewer engagement on media platforms. To understand this process, the following examples of content created recently by MXLink highlights how photos and film have been incorporated to spark curiosity for viewer’s to watch along with providing inspiration from the story itself.

NZ tracks where rider’s love to train and race – Patetonga MCC. Film: James Bennell and MXLink.

Starting with the film ‘NZ’s tracks where rider’s love to train and race – Patetonga MCC. The main focus of the day’s shoot was to showcase NZ’s MX legend – Darryll King – sharing his knowledge on riding and racing at Patetonga MCC track to an audience of rider’s from all ages and ability. The appeal factor of DK’s down-to-earth speaking on how to approach a jump, ruts, whoops, and starts makes for easy watching as well as taking on board his advice.

The staging of the film shots was a collaborative effort between the cameraman, myself, and DK so that content varied from drone footage, to in front and behind riding shots, to interview style on the track. The editing process involved selection of film shots overlaid with Darryll’s thoughts on how to ride one of the best motocross tracks in the country. The film was posted on February 7 and has received 498 likes and 66K views.

NZ MX Nationals Opening Round at Taranaki MCC in 2015 Film: Motion Video and MXLink.

The film edits completed through-out February and early March focused on providing context to the evolvement of NZ motocross rider’s and National Championships. Key factors on film creations were to share the character traits of rider’s who have embarked on racing in NZ and overseas, not only providing viewer’s insight on what were the main challenges to overcome, but also pin-point the drive and determination of each to achieve set goals.

The film ‘NZ MX Nationals Opening Round at Taranaki MCC’ shot in 2015 paid homage to the level of racing, professionalism, and passion from rider’s, Teams, and club committee member’s which have shaped the sport over the past decade. By shooting content inside Team pit set-ups, track-side, along with interviews conducted by commentator – Neil Ritchie – the film told the story of what unfolded on the day. Editing the reel involved selection of shots which held viewer’s attention while remaining steadfast to not reveal all the story until the final clip.

Katherine Prumm – now Oberlin – Brown – shares her thoughts on winning Women’s Motocross World Cup in 2006 and 2007. Filming: Motion Video and MXLink.

The film interview with Katherine Prumm – now Oberlin-Brown – focused on sharing Katherine’s thoughts on winning Women’s Motocross World Cup in 2006 and 2007. Shooting the interview in 2016, near Katherine’s home involved planning what questions to ask which would highlight the enormity of her achievement given no NZ female had raced in Europe’s MX Championships, nor won.

Having known Katherine for a number of years, the interview was relaxed with KP sharing why she was so focused, driven, and determined to achieve her goals of becoming Women’s MX World Cup Champion. Katherine’s comments were both thought provoking and inspiring on how a female – riding, training, and racing against the guys for the past 10 years in NZ – could rise above all odds – race and win against the best women’s MX rider’s in the world.
