Jamie Chadwick wins WSeries Round 2 at Formula One Barcelona Grand Prix at the weekend converting pole position to top step of the podium, pushing the defending Champion to maximum of 75 points on the table board from 3 Races. Completing all out British affair with Abbi Pulling and Alice Powell rounding out top 3, Chadwick stretches out Overall points gap even further with Pulling 2nd on 38 and Powell 3rd in Championship on 37 points.
With top 10 drivers qualifying within 0.931 seconds – much tighter than in Miami where the top 6 were within 0.943 gap- grid position, management of tyres and sustaining performance under pressure were key factors on results. Most certainly, Jamie, Abbi, and Alice had good handle on maintaining tyre window on track in temperatures which peaked at 45 degrees during the 30 minute plus one lap race.
From start position of P4 on the grid, Beitske Visser rounded out race in P5, while 2021 WSeries Overall 3rd place driver Emma Kimilainen made substantial race starting in P5 to finish 4th Overall. Spanish trio: Marta Garcia, Belen Garcia, and Nerea Marti kept their Championship points alive finishing Race 3 in 6th, 7th and 8th position overall, respectively.
Most certainly, the battle mid-field meant Brits Sarah Moore and Jessica Hawkins had to contend with CortDAO Racing Team driver Fabienne Wohlwend nudging the duo to P10 and P11. Brazilian Bruna Tomaselli completed 2021 WSeries driver line-up on P12 ahead of newly recruited drivers: Juju Noda, Emely de Haus, Bianca Bustamante, Tereza Babickova and Chloe Chambers rounding out Race results. Abbie Eaton made up 2 places from qualifying P18 to race finish of P16.
With new cars provided by Toyota Gazoo Racing New Zealand for WSeries Barcelona GP and Suzuka GP, all drivers showed high levels of adaptation given switch to Toyota engines albeit with same Tatuus chassis. Indeed, praise was forthcoming from WSeries Racing Director Dave Ryan on the newly formed collaboration:
‘”We had a different set of cars here from TGRNZ, they are really good cars and the guys did a fantastic job preparing them for us, with five of their crew here this weekend. They’re great workers and have fitted in seamlessly, so it’s been a pleasure working with them”‘.
