Avalon Lewis shares her thoughts on racing World WCR Round 2 at Cremona this weekend. Having achieved best result of P4 in Race 1 at the opening Round in Assen 3 weeks prior, Avalon ramps up her focus and expectation to battle with the front rider’s from Free Practice, to Superpole, to Races 1 @ 2 on May 2 – 4.
Never one to shy away from a challenge – both on and off the track – Avalon astounds all inspiring young female rider’s of her resilience to pursue a racing career which has spanned 10 plus years. From her first debut entry racing NZ’s Grand Prix in 2009, to competing in Italy, Australia, and Japan, to racing the European Junior Cup and winning the Titles in 2015 and 2016, to becoming the first women to take victory in NZ Supersport 600cc Championship in 2019 – Avalon has led the charge on what can be achieved on the world stage.
Making her debut entry in World WCR Round 3 at Cremona in 2024, Avalon displayed all talent, skills, and race-craft against her peers taking P8 in Superpole, P8 in Race 1 and P7 in Race 2. The results were even more thrilling given Avalon had become Mum to son Nash, along with conquering the mammoth task of raising funds to compete in Europe’s World WCR opening season based in New Zealand.
Avalon: ”It’s great to be racing WCR. Although I’ve achieved success in the sport previously, we’ve never had the opportunity to race for a women’s world championship until last year. So that’s the reason for me competing. I want to race against the best in the world for that title and to battle with Maria Herrera and her fellow Spaniards at Round 1 was a good start”.
Put in context, Avalon’s sense of determination to achieve set goals goes way back, as MXLink recalls an interview with Avalon when she was racing WSBK SSP300 in 2017. Spending a couple of days with Avalon based in Roermond, Netherlands, the reality struck on the huge sacrifices she has made to pursue a racing career – away from family and friends from one season to the next – along with staying physically fit and mentally prepared to race without any actual bike time on the track in between Rounds.
Heading into World WCR Round 2, the Carl Cox Motorsports supported rider has plenty of verve and resolve to deliver the best possible results on the track. Neither overcome with the enormity of the task ahead – travelling from NZ to race in Italy for 2 days – nor anxious that she has the capabilities to match her European counterparts – Avalon will go full gas to make the most of the opportunity presented.
Avalon: ”Cremona this weekend will see much closer racing as we all tested there four weeks ago. I need to be fast and aggressive from the first lap of the weekend to ensure good track position and qualify well. I’m expecting the races to be huge fights right until the last lap so I’ll be strategic and get my elbows out”.
